- Abstract:
- While the population of the cities all over the world is increasing, more and more tunnels and underground transportation passages are being constructed. So, there is an urgent need for designing an appropriate ventilation system for these passages, not only in normal conditions but also for emergency scenarios especially in fire incidents. In the present research, the operation of Saccardo ventilation system, especially in emergency fire scenarios is investigated using computational fluid dynamics methods. Studies conducted in this research are classified into five parts. In the first part, the effect of tunnel ventilation flow rate (due to Saccardo system operation) and its interaction with smoke plume is investigated. Studied flow rates include a wide range of flow rates from quantities lower than critical flow rate to quantities much higher than critical flow rate. Finally, a range of flow ratesis suggested as the optimum one for tunnel flow rate. In the second part of simulation, an optimum angle of injection for Saccardo jet is suggested so as to maximize the induced flow rate and minimize the consumed power. Inclination angle is changed from 7 degree to 45 degree and induced flow rate and tunnel flow rate are computed. It was shown that in a distinct inclination angle, induced flow rate is maximized. This fact can help minimize the consumed power. In the third part, induced flow as a function of Saccardo flow rate is studied. In the next part, slope effect is investigated on the performance of Saccardo ventilation system and thermal behavior of smoke plume. It was shown that this parameter has a remarkable effect on velocity and temperature profiles neighboring fire source. Final part is assigned to investigation of the effect of fire source distance from Saccardo nozzle. Results of this research can provide optimum conditions for designing and using Saccardo ventilation system in tunnels
