- Abstract:
- In the recent decades, outrigger systems have come into widespread use in tall buildings. This structural form has good capability to reduce the response of the high-rise structures subjected to lateral loads. Despite extensive recent use, outrigger is not listed as seismic load resistance system in current building codes and specific design guidelines is not available. In the other hands, inherent damping of structure influence on the analysis and design of the tall buildings. Measurements in actual buildings indicate that the damping in tall buildings is lower than damping in low to mid-rise buildings. Recently, a novel structural system, which is defined as damped outrigger, has been proposed to use in tall buildings. In this study, seismic behavior of tall buildings having multiple outriggers equipped with viscous damper has been considered. In this respect, dual structural system (braced moment frame) modeled with nonlinear material are selected. Moreover, two general cases are established; with and without outrigger. Noted, the number and position of outriggers is varied along the height of structure. Nonlinear time-history analysis is applied to assess the performance of damped-outrigger system. For this purpose, eight scaled ground motions are selected. Response of these structures including maximum story drift and maximum base shear force is compared to determine the optimal position and number of outriggers. Conclusively, considering the base shear force as criteria, the results of static and nonlinear dynamic analysis are so close. It should be added, story drift for bare structure at the top levels is more than that of the others. Therefore, utilizing outrigger in roof level can be more efficient. Furthermore, optimal number of outrigger depends on the height of structure
