- Abstract:
- Garbage leachate which contains suspended and soluble pollutants is produced due to the decomposition of organic substances by microbial activities. Moreover, other sources of water such as surface runoff, rainfall, and groundwater – which in many cases may percolate through the garbage-, can intensify leachate production which in turn imposes considerable impacts on the main elements of the environment, such as water, soil, and air, and has health effects on human beings. Therefore, minimization of leachate production is an important issue in the solid waste management considering economic, social, cultural, and many other aspects. On Kish Island, despite the favorable climatological conditions for microbial activities the collected and transferred waste to the disposal site contains small amounts of leachate. While, not only does this leachate cause environmental problems in most large and small cities and villages, but also, its collection and treatment is costly. The objective of this thesis is to assess the garbage leachate production trend and effective cultural, social, and economic factors of low garbage leachate production on Kish Island, and to introduce this beautiful Island as a good model for other islands, cities, and villages- which are facing the environmental problems, economical expenses, and social and cultural troubles in this regard
