- Abstract:
- Existing design methods for steel frames has been improved over the last three decades in order to incorporate the behavior of semi-rigid steel connections in furtherance of frame design and since the analysis and design of structures is often done based on the assumption of completely rigid or pinned behavior, therefore, the actual behavior of connections and their modeling can help to understand the actual behavior of structures.Knowledge of the initial rotational stiffness of the connection is important for elastic analysis of structures. Investigations show that structures with semi-rigid connections have many features which are the causes to prefer these kinds of connections to the rigid connections. For example we can mention, reduced base shear, being more economical, more energy absorption capability, etc.Various features of these connections led researchers to investigate various forms of semi-rigid connections and the unique characteristics of each of these connections. So, today a variety of models to show the moment - rotation curve of connections which are common in the industry,is provided which most of them are commonly used for most well-known and very common connections. To simplify moment - rotation curves, also simple bi-linear or multi-linear models can be used.In this study, a new semi-rigid splice connectionwill be introduced and its behavior under monotonic and cyclic loading will be scrutinized based on its moment - rotation curve.Finite element method is used to modelthe connection and to obtain moment - rotation curves. Also we have tried to verify the accuracy of the results of computer analysis with precise mathematical analysis and experimental results of other researchers.Significant advantages of this special connection are ductile behavior, high energy dissipation capacity under earthquake loads, easy installation capability because of its prefabricated characteristic and finally it’s more economical than other moment connections
