- Abstract:
- In this project, energy in form of electricity and hydrogen was produced in microbial fuel cell and microbial electrolysis cell respectively. For reducing costs, a stainless steel mesh with graphite coating was used as anode electode. Also for increasing efficiency, anode was positioned in cells in a spiral mode. Efficiency of cells was investigated in batch and continuous mode. In this research, dairy wastewater was used as substrate. This wastewater not only has severe emissions, but also is high energy content. In the field of dairy wastewater treatment and hydrogen production in an microbial electrolysis cell wasn’t observed any article. At the first, wastewater was treated in two microbial fuel cell in state of illumination and darkness. Acquired results from the cell in illumination was very interesting. Thus this cell was investigated in an dynamic and non-dynamic mode.Internal resistance of the cells in darkness and illumination was 50 and 100 ohm respectively. Also maximum power density and culombic efficiency for the cell in darkness were 10.3 w⁄m^3 and 48% respectively, although these parameters for the cell in illumination were 5.15 w⁄m^3 and 18% respectively. On the other hand, COD removal in illumination mode was more than darkness mode and all of these results were referenced to the biomass that was formed in the cell in illumination. After this stage, electricity production and COD, phosphate and nitrate removal was investigated in continuous mode in darkness. Finally, hydrogen production in electrolysis cell was investigated in batch and continuous mode. Althogh maximum COD removal was 3.69 g_COD⁄(L.Day) and was observed in continuous mode, maximum rate of hydrogen production and culombic efficiency was observed in 700 mV applied voltage in batch mode. These parameters were 0.3 (m_(H_2)^3)⁄(m^3 d) and 23% respectively. Therefore one of the most important result of this project was investigation of dairy wastewater treatment in microbial electrolysis cells
