  7. Abstract:
  8. Ship maneuvering simulation and prediction in preliminary design stages has been concerned since forty years ago due to accidents occurred to large vessels and so many efforts have been held to develop the methods for simulation of ship maneuvering. Standards concerning ship maneuvering have been presented by International Maritime Organization that is known as a criteria to evaluate maneuvering performance of the ships. Traditionally ship maneuvering has been simulated in deep water and without any environmental conditions such as wind, wave, marine currents and effects resulted by asymmetric flow around ship hull during waterway entrance and shallow waters. Furthermore by introducing the digital computers simulation of ship dynamic in horizontal plane has become possible and the simulators can be used to satisfy the designing goals. But the problem that mariners are facing today is the entrance of ultra large vessels in the shipping trade due to needs for marine transport nowadays. At the other hand the harbors that these kinds of ships are entering have remain unchanged. Therefore an important problem would be ship maneuvering during shallow water entry, bank effects and environmental conditions effect on ship maneuvering. By addressing to these problems in this thesis a method has been developed to study the ship maneuvering respect to ship hull properties, steering and control devices, environmental conditions and waterway properties as an integrated system. The nonlinear maneuvering of ships have been studied and related problems have been mentioned. Then the mathematical equations of ship maneuvering have been derived and formulated in a manner that includes certain environmental effects. The experimental method of ship maneuvering simulation have been developed and systematic tests are conducted in two phase of towing tank model tests and free running model testing in open waters. The facilities needed have been designed and manufactured and model tests are handled as possible. The results show that the developed algorithm for experimental simulation of ship maneuvering is very powerful. Finally a solver of ship maneuvering equations is developed on the basis of determinate hydrodynamic coefficients. This computer code is capable to simulate ship maneuvering under environmental conditions by the use of database
