- Abstract:
- Up to now, many seismic design methods and construction technologies have been investigated to reduce the seismic responses of bridges, buildings and potentially vulnerable structures. [1] Introducing a new effective systems aim to control of vibration caused by earthquake on the structures will be useful. This system is based on repelling of imposed force to the structures with tuned mass dampers (TMDs), to gain minimum damage. The detuning of the structures by equipped with TMDs resulted from nonlinear behavior due to dynamic loads such as strong ground motions are real concern in the practical applications. The application of TMDs, as expected, can reduce the deformation of the structures in comparison to the cases without TMDs. Motion of the structure is utilized to produce relative motion between the TMD and the structure that, in turn, dissipate energy. Many supplemental energy dissipation devices are very various and dissipate energy through a variety of mechanisms including the yielding of mild steel, viscous-elastic action in rubber materials and sliding friction [2, 3].In order to analyze the effect of the TMDs we can use a wide range of programs such as IDARC 2-D. The original version of this program include the damage model developed by Park and Ang (1984) to prepare a measure of the accumulated damage sustained by the components of the structure, at each story level, and the entire building. This damage index included the ratio of the maximum to ultimate deformations, as well as the ratio of the maximum hysteretic energy dissipated to the maximum monotonic energy, for capturing both components of damage [4-6]. The acceptance of innovative systems in structural engineering is based on a combination of performance enhancement versus construction cost and long-term effects. Structural systems are complex combination of individual structure components. New innovative devices need to be integrated into the complex systems, with realistic evaluation of their performance and impact on the structural system. The aim of involving energy absorbers in a structure for earthquake resistance is to concentrate hysteretic behavior in specially designed and detailed regions of the structure and to avoid inelastic behavior in main gravity load-resisting structural elements. Correctly implemented; a perfect damper should be able to simultaneously decrease both stress and deflection in the structure [7]
