  7. Abstract:
  8. Textbooks play major roles in education and incorporation of textbooks into the courses can better the outcome of the learning (McGrath, 2006; Sheldon, 1988). Considering the role of textbooks, it seems crucial to examine and evaluate textbooks to select the best material for the educational courses (Tomlinson, 2001). This study focused on the evaluation of the EFL textbook, Prospect 1, which is currently taught at secondary schools of Iran. The researcher intended to evaluate the textbook from the perspectives of both teachers and learners based on the evaluation model proposed by Litz (2005). The participants of the study were 173 learners and 102 teachers who filled out the questionnaires and were interviewed afterwards. Through descriptive analysis and ANOVA procedure, the results of the study revealed that the textbook has partially been successful in meeting the needs of both learners and teachers. There were plenty of authentic materials regarding the activities, language, and even photos. Moreover, the practical consideration of the textbook such as the price was regarded as the most satisfactory obtained result in this study. However, the book seems to have not been convincing enough regarding the presentation of skills, cultural norms, and with regard to the tastes of learners. In addition, the significant difference between the learners with prior knowledge and those without any prior knowledge in English indicated that the textbook under study was not yet comparable to the global textbooks. In conclusion, it is necessary that the material developers in Iran consider a balance in the presentation of the skills as well as notice the diversity in the tastes of language learners to provide the right incentive for learning English. Incorporating the elements of successful ELT textbooks could also hasten the process of learning and meeting the defined objectives
