- Abstract:
- In this project, Olive Mill Wastes (OMW) has been considered as a raw material for a bio-refinery. The project is consisted of a design section using SuperPro Designer software and an experimental section. The biorefinery was designed using the software after conducting a survey on the production of different value added material from OMW. The designed process consisted of xanthan gum, methane gas and agriculture fertilizer production. As much as 15000 L of the diluted OMW (to 50% of the initial concentration) is purified and 88 Kg xanthan gum (in 7 days), 2840 Kg methane gas and 200 Kg fertilizer in 25 days are produced at the same time.
In the experimental section, effect of applying coagulation - flocculation as a pretreatment of OMW on the gum production and the size of process units was investigated. Different experimental tests showed that using lime together with FeCl3 as a coagulant at the concentrations of 0.0012 M and 0.054 M, leads to removal efficiencies of 41% and 62% for chemical oxygen demand and polyphenol concentrations, respectively.
The biorefinery was re-designed by the software in accordance with the experimental results. The new designed process consisted of physicochemical pre-treatment and production units. In the production unit, the amount of manufactured xanthan gum increased to 200 Kg which is 2.23 folds of the design without the pretreatment unit. In addition, no dilution water is required in the new design. Therefore, equipment these are already considered for the old design can be utilized for the operation based on the new design with 2 times of wastewater treatment capacity - Keywords:
