  7. Abstract:
  8. Due to the importance of concrete gravity dams, safety issues are of great importance in these structures. On the other hand, because of the uncertainty in the geotechnical characteristics of the rock foundation in the design phase, and also consider the significant affects of these parameters on seismic response of concrete gravity dams, it’s not possible to determine safety factor accurately. Since the Sliding control in the base of the dam can protect the stability of concrete gravity dams in the operation phase, this study concentrate in this subject and intends to calculate the Sliding between the dam base and the foundation with finite element analysis, considering the rock foundation parameters. Comparing the static sliding between the dam base and foundation with the result of instrumentation verify modeling based on the foundation and dam parameters. The extent of the rock foundation geotechnical parameters causes the different sliding. Also with considering cohesion, sliding between dam base and the rock foundation decreases. As a result, disregarding this issue causes overdesigns. The high value of shear strength coefficient which is derived from empirical research and situ experiment and also the result of software based on this coefficient indicate that these dams have enough shear strength and stability so that with a strong rock foundation, it’s unlikely to see shear failure or sliding in these structures
