  7. Abstract:
  8. Nowadays, microgrids which comprise decentralized generation (DG) have attracted considerable attention. Establishment of DG-based microgrids that are normally connected to the main grid, is a practical method to reduce the costs of power outage and to increase the electricity supply reliability. The aim of this thesis is optimum planning of a microgrid containing wind turbines, photovoltaic systems and diesel generators, considering both the grid-connected and isolated modes of operation.
In the areas with considerable solar radiation and wind potential valuable opportunities exist in utilizing these resources. In addition to these renewable resources, the use of controllable resources such as diesel generators is also necessary to balance load and generation.
This thesis aims to establish a balance between supply and demand by finding the optimal selection of types, quantity and capacity of DGs in a given microgrid. After formulating the problem, we proceed with a simulation-based study on the possible choices of the microgrid configuration in different periods of the planning horizon, in which it is either grid-connected or isolated, to achieve a configuration with high reliability and minimizes cost.
The simulation is based on considering production and consumption time series of relevant components, and finding the optimal answer with genetic algorithm. The proposed method is applied to the process of designing a microgrid in a specific area and the results are presented
