- Abstract:
- The exact modeling of a concrete dam system, which includes concrete dam body, foundation, reservoir and sediment layer, plays an important role in the analysis of the interaction between the concrete dam components. In this thesis, the interaction between the components of a concrete gravity dam system is studied by Finite element method. The interactions between these components are analyzed in time domain. In this thesis, we focus on the sediment layer and its impacts on the response of the dam. The sediment layer is modeled as a two phase medium. In order to study the effects of the sediment layer on the dam response, models with different heights and materials of the sediment layer are analyzed. The results of these analysis show that not only the material, but also the height of sediment layer affects the dam response and in the analysis of concrete dam systems, both the material and the height of the sediment layer must be considered. The sediment layer affects the dam response in two ways: 1- Through the attenuation in hydrodynamic waves, 2-Through the direct interaction with the dam body. So the effects of each of these factors should be considered, by considering different materials and heights of the sediment layer. Increasing the solidity of sediment layer (increasing the bulk modulus of the fluid phase), in the low heights of sediment layer (lower than 0.2 of the dam body height), causes the reduction of the dam response. But the higher the sediment layer, the more the dam response with respect to the models with less solid sediment layer. So, in the models with solid and low height sediment layer, the dam response decreases by increasing the sediment layer height. But in the models with the sediment layer higher than 0.2 of dam body height, the dam response increases by increasing the sediment layer height. Therefore, in the models with solid sediment layer, the dam response is function of both the material and the height of sediment layer. But, In the models with flexible sediment layer, the magnitudes of the dam responses for different heights of sediment layer, are very close and the dam response increases only because the increasing of the sediment layer height
