  7. Abstract:
  8. Beam to column connections affect on the performance of the steel frames. Connections are assumed pin, semi rigid or rigid based on rigidity. Previously most steel structures designed as pin or rigid connections but lately many studies have been done on structures with semi rigid connections and these studies show that semi rigid connections have excellent properties that makes this connection a superior response such as less base shear, more economic, ability to absorb more energy and etc. In this study semi rigid connection with torsional plate has been studied. In addition to previous characteristics, this connection has special properties such as simple implementation, Dimension Reduction of columns when seismic criteria of moment frames is to be considered and reliability to change in the shape of the connection according to design needs. In first stage the connection has been modeled with utilization finite element software and extracted M-θ curve. Then the conclusions was verified with solid mechanics. In next stage the influences of component dimensions have been evaluated. This assessment was done with more than 50 analyses. Then the requirment types of this connections were evaluated. At the end of this step relationship between dimensions and initial flexure rigidity has been presented with series and parallel spring theory. Additionally a relationship between dimensions and ultimate moment resistant has been presented. In second work this connection was modeled on a portal moment frame with 6 stories and 3 spans that the height of stories are 3m and the length of spans are 6m with Opensees software and tried to present an optimal combined type from rigid, pin and semi rigid connections that removes plastic hinges from columns and improves the performance of the moment frame according to ASCE41-06
