- In this study, we examine all decisions related to operating room planning and scheduling problem by considering uncertainty in surgery durations. To achieve this purpose, first, a mixed integer linear program is developed to determine the master surgical schedule. Then, two different approaches are investigated to model the weekly planning and scheduling of elective patients problem considering uncertain surgery durations. In the first approach, a unified model is proposed and an effective and efficient method, based on the recently introduced anarchic society optimization algorithm, is developed to solve the problem. In the second approach, first an advance scheduling problem is formulated as a two-stage stochastic programming model to determine the surgery date of each patient. Then, an allocation model is developed for daily scheduling of patients, based on the results of the advance scheduling model. The proposed models in the second approach are solved by an efficient multi-cut L-shaped algorithm. In order to implement the proposed algorithms in stochastic mode, a large number of scenarios are produced and then they are reduced to a reasonable number of scenarios by using of a forward scenario reduction-based method. Also, a daily rescheduling model is proposed to adapt the made decisions with the actual conditions and the occurrence of unexpected events such as the arrival of emergency patients. Finally, based on the real data collected from Mehregan Hospital in Qazvin, the proposed procedures are carried out to compare and evaluate the performance of them
