- Abstract:
- Titania is one of the photocatalytic materials , but low quantum yield and relatively high band gap of TiO2 limited its applications. There are several ways to improve the photocatalytic properties of this material relied on narrowing the band gap,by doping TiO2 with other metals and oxides or increasing its specific surface area.In this work ,TiO2-SiO2-Ni coating have been made by sol-gel process and deposited on quartz substrate by using of dip-coating method .Effect of increasing Nickel content in nanocomposite and primary sol on crystalline structure, morphol ogy, photocatalytic properties and specific surface area have been investigated by means of X-Ray diffraction method, FT-IR, SEM, EDX, degradation of methyl orange under UV and visible light,UV-VIS and BET methods. It has been observed that adding Ni in TiO2-SiO2-Ni oatings leads to increase the size of anatase crystallite from 12.5 nm to 27.6 nm, decrease band gap energy from 3.32 eV to 2.82 eV,and improve photocatalytic properties of TiO2-SiO2 nanocomposite. The sample with 2.5 wt% Ni and heat treated at 550 C had the highest photocatalytic activity with 60% and 71% degredation of methylorange under visible and UV light, higher surface roughness (0.36 nm),and the greatest specific surface area (44.41 m2/gr).In coatings with more than 2.5 wt%Ni, despite of lower band gapenergy, formation of NiO on coating surface leads to decreasein the surface roughness, specific surface area and photocatalytic properties
