- Abstract:
- Healthcare industry, in terms of gross national product, is one of the largest and fastest growing sectors of almost all countries. It is not surprising that a large amount of research has been focused on advancing medical practices and improving management methods in healthcare systems. One of the most important areas for improvement is patient flow management. Patient flow indicates the capability of a health care system in providing fast, reliable, and efficient services. Although capacity of health care system has grown, patients still have been facing long delays before getting into the system due to ineffective management. Queuing models can offer appropriate methods for analyzing and improving patient flow in healthcare systems. In this thesis, applications of queuing theory in healthcare management problems were collected and reviewed. In so doing, all subsystems of healthcare system that have been studied using a queuing theoretic approach were identified and the major ones were described. Then, an obstetric unit in a hospital was chosen, modeled, and analyzed using queuing theory. The model was verified and validated by simulation. Recommendations for increasing the system capacity were provided based on results of the developed queuing model. Finally, potential application of simulation-based queuing models and a System-of-Systems approach for healthcare problems were emphasized and accordingly future works were identified
