- Abstract:
- Recently concrete filled steel tubular columns developed in the construction industry. In these types of columns, concrete and steel have efficient and complementary performance because of proper confinement provided by steel tube for concrete which leads to increase strength and ductility of concrete, also concrete prevents local and inward buckling of steel tube. CFST columns have several advantages over conventional reinforced concrete columns such as elimination of formwork and reinforcement, rapid construction, decrease in the column dimensions and saving extra floor space and also improvement in the load-carrying capacity, ductility and energy absorption ability. Despite the above advantages there are some major problems with CFST columns which are the outward buckling of steel tube and the imperfect steel-concrete interface bonding. To resolve this problem it is proposed to weld external steel rings onto the exterior surface of steel tube which leads to increase the confinement of core concrete, delaying the buckling of the steel tube, improvement in the steel-concrete interface bonding and increase the load-carrying capacity and ductility of the column. To study the effect of steel rings in the behavior of the CFST columns, a numerical model is developed using the Abaqus software. For this purpose 14 specimen of ring-confined CFST columns are modeled in the 3 groups. Past experimental results were used to verify the accuracy of the modelling process. Then results of the proposed analytical model were used to verify the results of the numerical modeling. In the last part of this study the verified finite element model was used to carry out a parametric study on the behavior of ring-confined CFST columns to understand which parameters have the most effect on the confinement of rings
