  7. Abstract:
  8. As steel shear walls are usually applied in the central cores of buildings (around the elevators and stairs), the use of opening as door is inevitable in steel shear wall spans. On the other hand, because of weakening the performance of steel shear walls due to the presence of these openings, it is necessary to apply stiffeners around it. The use of stiffeners around all sides of opening continued to beams and columns, is very expensive. Therefore, the necessity of studying on the effect of different arrangements of stiffeners on the behavior of steel shear walls is felt. In this research, a number of steel shear walls with different characteristics in terms of plate aspect ratio, location of opening, arrangement of stiffeners around opening and number of stories were designed and the nonlinear static analysis was performed. Behavioral parameters were obtained to investigate the system performance, so the evaluation of structural criteria as well as economic was done in order to achieve the optimum location and stiffeners’ arrangement for each condition. The results showed that presence of the opening at one-third of the span width results in heavier sections for stiffeners due to maximum interaction with diagonal tension field, and also this is not recommended because of economic reasons. By investigating the improvement of performance of models in terms of stiffness, shear strength and ductility with respect to the same model without opening, it is found that with increasing the number of stories, the improvement of performance in terms of stiffness and shear strength decreases, and in term of ductility increases in most cases. The amount of this improvement for models with ratio of height to width greater than one was observed more than other models. Also, the strength reduction factor obtained from 6.5 to 9 in the majority of cases. Finally, a modified model was proposed which is more favorable in terms of cost and performance in comparison with the similar unmodified model
