- Abstract:
- Nowadays, every society tries to adjust its development’s orientation towards sustainable development. Construction projects have a significant share of every country’s economy. Construction waste management is one of the most important issues affecting sustainability. Construction waste management and waste minimization programs in construction projects not only can save resources and help the economy, but also can enhance a country’s development toward sustainable development. Designing process can be an effective phase in waste management among different stages of a project life cycle. Considering the significant number of concrete building constructions in Iran, the aim of this research is to identify proper practices of minimizing steel reinforcement bars’ waste during the design phase as a useful guideline in order to achieve sustainable development. For this reason, a mechanical rebar coupling was selected as an example for waste reduction. This coupling devise was used for designing two common concrete buildings. The results indicate that the suggested pattern can decrease the waste, cause no increase in costs and improve building performance as compared to traditional designing procedures. Additionally, barriers to new technologies dissemination were identified and verified by using a questionnaire survey. Finally, the study utilized the findings to develop appropriate strategies to overcome the barriers for implementation of the new construction waste management practices
