  7. Abstract:
  8. Travel time is the most significant element in choosing among different modes of transportation. In order to increase the public transportation’s utility we need to utilize some methods to reduce public transportation travel time and passenger delay. Bus system, as one of the major types of public transportation, is mainly influenced by the traffic flow more than other types of public transportation. In order to increase the bus system’s reliability we need to utilize a controlling system so that we could increase its movement discipline and reduce line’s disruption. In this research we proposed an optimization model based on bus holding strategy and the real-time data from the route. This model aims to minimize the passenger waiting time. We used real-time data from the Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) of buses along the route. In each step, this model will determine the optimal holding time for each bus in addition to bus’s dwell time at each stop. Adding this amount of time to buses schedule will increase their disciplined movement and prevents the bus bunching. Due to problem’s real-time feature, solving time plays a vital role in bus holding strategy. Two metaheuristic algorithm, Simulated Annealing and Particle Swarm Optimization were utilized for solving this problem. This model tested on a BRT line in Mashad, Iran. The results indicated that bus holding strategy was able to reduce passenger waiting time to 8.65%
