- Ever growing users’ demand for higher mobile data traffic and a rise in the number of communicating devices in the network oblige operators to design novel schemes in order to respond to users’ requirements. The limited available frequency spectrum cannot handle this increased data traffic demand in cellular networks. It is estimated that by 2020 the amount of traffic in mobile networks, grows ten times more than mobile traffic in 2014. Data offloading is an existing approach that enables operators to support users’ demands. In this approach, in addition to utilizing Wi-Fi technology as a means to transfer data as well as conventional cellular communications, opportunistic communications aimed at exchanging delay-tolerant contents among users, is assumed as one of the data offloading approaches that takes the spot light in 5th generation of mobile networks. In opportunistic communications, users exchange data via device to device communications. Defining proper content dissemination methods and designing efficient content transfer algorithms aimed at increasing the amount of data offloaded from cellular networks is of great importance in opportunistic networks. In this thesis, we investigate three scenarios that deal with different problems in opportunistic communications. In all of the investigated scenarios, we seek to design appropriate content dissemination algorithms to enhance the number of users that can receive their required content using opportunistic communications independent from cellular network. In order to solve the content dissemination problem in opportunistic networks, target selection algorithms are proposed and the modeling is considered for both cases with static and mobile users. Furthermore, in this thesis we consider incentive schemes to motivate users to cooperate more actively in content dissemination process. Besides providing mathematical analysis in the network through time, distributed peer and content selection algorithms are designed, taking under consideration practical assumptions and the amount of exchanged signaling between users. Simulation results in each scenario approve the desired performance of proposed algorithms and modeling
