  7. Abstract:
  8. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the most common cause of vision loss in those aged over 50. There are two main types of AMD, Wet and Dry form. Wet AMD is more severe though more treatable. There are three conventional treatments for AMD including laser therapy, surgery and intravitreal injection of anti-VEGF into the eye. Delivery of drugs to the posterior segment of the eye is still challenging and several implants and devices are currently under investigation for their ability to stimulate the retina, producing visual percepts. The application of intravitreal bevacizumab (Avastin) has expanded tremendously from the time of its introduction into ophthalmic care since 3 years ago. Intravitreal injection may cause various side effects such as increasing the eye pressure, eye infections, blurring vision as well as the serious side effects influencing other body organs. In addition, high frequency of injections would be required to regenerate the lost vision. In order to overcome some of these problems we purposed new drug delivery system composed of Avastin-Fe3O4 nanocomposits. Fe3O4 nanoparticles were successfully synthesized through co-precipitation method with approximately size of 20 nm .Fe3O4 nanoparticles are able to aggregate in desired area by applying magnetic field. The saturation magnetization (Ms) of synthesized iron oxide nanoparticles was about 55.6648 emu/g which is completely suitable in order to move magnetic nanoparticles. Besides, Flow cytometry tests showed that 90.5% of NPs are Avasin loaded. Since previous studies reported intravitreal injection of iron oxide nanoparticles will not reveal any overt abnormalities in the vitreous, our new method can be replaced with conventional treatments due to long release of Avastin instead of several injections as well as reducing systemic side effects by high concentration of Avastin in the posterior segment of the eye
