  7. Abstract:
  8. Particulates are a group of air pollutants. They can enter the respiratory system by breathing and cause adverse effects on its performance. Also, inhaled drugs, recently have found many applications in the field of drug delivery. Prediction of particle deposition in the lungs during breathing, can provide useful information on the effects of deposited particles on the respiratory system. When a person is exposed to breathable particulates, after a while with completion of a few respiratory cycles, particle deposition rate, reaches a certain amount at the quasi-steady state. A lot of researchers have investigated particle deposition in the lung, but all of them have studied a single respiratory cycle. In this study, using a 5-lobe symmetric model, the effect of several successive respiratory cycles on the particle deposition in the lungs is investigated. Deposition in each of 5 lobes is calculated by successive respiratory cycles. The effect of successive cycles on the deposition amount, for a wide range of particle size, is found to be negligible. But for a certain range of particle size and respiratory flow, by considering the effect of successive cycles, the deposition in a cycle is found to be more than the amount calculated for a single cycle. Taking successive respiratory cycles into account, can result in more accurate model than considering a single respiratory cycle. This model can be used to enhance the accuracy of calculating the particle deposition to the respiratory system due to particulate pollution, or equipment such as nebulizer drug delivery systems
