  7. Abstract:
  8. Operational wastes of nuclear power plants are classified according to their radioactivity level & physical state. According to the radioactivity level, operational wastes are divided into low level waste (LLW) & intermediate wastes (ILW); & based on physical state they are divided into 3 groups of wet solid & liquid wastes, dry solid wastes & gaseous wastes.Bushehr nuclear power plants produce 1600 barrels of waste per year, among which dry solid waste is about 40 percent. According to the physical nature & treatment methods used, the dry solid waste is further classified into combustible, non- combustible, compressible & incompressible wastes. The purposes of dry solid waste treatment is maximum reduction of the waste volume for storing & final disposal and also concentrating & stabilizing radioactive materials in the waste structure. The method used in BNPP for solid waste volume reduction is to compress those wastes that are compressible. By doing so the solid waste volume is reduced to almost 1/5 of its initial volume. In this thesis the feasibility of incineration for solid waste volume reduction of BNPP is investigated. In the first step, 19 Polyethylene bags containing dry solid waste is segregated into woven fabrics, plastics, paper & other wastes; of which 76% of dry solid waste were combustible. In the second step, combustible part of dry solid waste burned and the remaining ash collected for cementation, then the ash is mixed with cement, & the optimum ratio of ash, water & cement is obtained, it was found that 35% cement, 35% ash & 30% water is the optimum mixture. The overall volume reduction of the waste after cementation was 1/35 . The combustion method for waste reduction is not feasible because the produced waste volume is lower than 500 m3/year.However, commissioning of 2 new units will make the incineration method economically feasible
