  7. Abstract:
  8. Transfer of Spent Nuclear Fuel from reactor building to storage facilities is one of the most important operations at Front End of Nuclear Fuel Cycle. The aim of this project is to calculate the risk of the radioactive materials release into the environment during various stages of spent fuel transfer operations. In addition, the contribution of each of the initiating events in total release probability were also determined. For this purpose, Probabilistic Risk Assessment method which is usually used in safety evaluation of the nuclear facilities, is applied. The main tools used in this method are event tree and fault tree. In this study, SAPHIRE software has been used to construct the event tree and fault tree. the release probability of radioactive materials from the reactor building to the environment, was calculated as 2.03E-003 (low release) and 7.26E-005 (high release). Comparison of the results with the results of a similar study reported by EPRI shows that the probability of release of radioactive materials for Busher nuclear power plant is somhow higher than that of EPRI, due to low reliability of the polar crane vertical yoke. Importance analysis is used to determin the most important basic events. According to the results of the F-V and Birnbaum importance analysis, cask and clad failure, mis-loading errors, fuel loading errors and cask/clad drop in the fuel pool are the most important events during the spent fuel transfer operations
