- Abstract:
- Recently, the nano-bio communication networks have received significant attention. Among different communication mechanisms proposed for nano communication, diffusion based molecular communication (DMC) is the most promising scheme. This thesis focuses on DMC and first proposes a theoretical model for this scheme. In the next part of the thesis, inspired by the molecule transport mechanisms in the biological cells, two biosynthetic modulator structures are proposed. In first structure, an ion channel based modulator for DMC is proposed which controls the rate of molecule release from the transmitter by modulating a gating parameter signal. The corresponding average modulated signal, i.e., the average release rate of the molecules from the transmitter, is derived in Laplace domain. Using simplifying assumptions, closed form expressions for the average modulated signal is obtained in time domain. Moreover, the statistics of the modulated signal are investigated. The second structure is modulator based on ion pumps in which the release rate of the molecules from the transmitter is controlled by modulating a light intensity signal. The pumping process of the ion pump is modeled by a Markov model. Based on this model, the stochastic nature of the modulated signal, i.e., the release rate of the ions from the transmitter is analyzed.Comparing these biosynthetic modulators with proposed theoretical model, some properties of the theoretical model is confirmed. On the other hand, it is revealed that theoretical model may lead to an optimistic performance for DMC.In the final part of the thesis, motivated by the desire to keep the encoder and decoder simple, a practical modulation scheme is proposed for DMC which avoids intersymbol interference (ISI). The performance of the proposed modulation scheme is analyzed in terms of the error probability. A lower bound on the error probability is derived. This simple modulation scheme is extended to a family of ISI-avoiding modulation schemes which is represented by a constrained graph. Due to the limited resources available at nano-machines, short blocklengths (limited delay) and modest memory resources are considered. The constrained graph is correspondingly modified. We propose a suboptimal approach to construct simple ISI-avoiding modulation schemes for a given number of available molecule types and maximum transmission delay. The results show that these suboptimal simple schemes are near optimal
