- This thesis is concerned with the performance of heavy equipments like electric substation transformers and bushings under earthquake loading. It begins with the description of the transformers, attached bushings, and some typical examples of substation failures in earthquake loading. This is followed by the field test and development of numerical models of transformer and two different types of seismic isolations, Natural rubber bearings (NRB) and high damping rubber bearings (HDRB) and in order to find the appropriate isolator, responses of fixed base and isolated transformers are compared. Important observations were made on the seismic responses of the transformer and its bushing. Numerical simulation confirmed that the NRB’s are not suitable option for isolating transformer bushing system from base excitations. This is because the NRB’s have a larg base displacement and it is not desired considering the interaction with the cable-connected other facilities. At the end, six specimens have been designed and manufactured, and compressive-shear test were carried out on them and results are presented. All cylindrical specimens have identical diameter and height. Specimens are loaded with a constant compressive force and subjected to a shear displacement. Shear force, shear displacement, compressive force and compressive displacement are measured. From the measured data, shear properties (shear stiffness and equivalent damping ratio) are determined
