Design of Line Heating in Creation of Certain Curvature in Sheet Metal

  8. Metal sheets are widely used in different industries such as ship building and pressure vessels. One of the most important things in these industries is to create the desired sheets through line heating process. Designing the heating lines in order to get the desired shape with the sufficient accuracy has always been a concern for the engineers in this process. In this research, different methods of designing the heating lines for creating special surfaces are discussed. By integrating the two algorithms called distance based criterion method and angle based criterion method in MATLAB, the heating path and its parameters are defined. These two algorithms can be used in order to predict the heating points on every two-dimensional shape with any specified curve. Heating parameters are defined by specifying geometric parameters such as bending angle and Radius of curve. Back propagation neural network is used in order to specify the heating parameters. The data used to train the neural network is from the experimental research conducted by Panahizade and Kim with the use of LASER. In one of the networks, sheet thickness, sheet width, number of irradiations, the speed and the power of the LASER are defined as the network inputs and bending angle is defined as the output of the network. In another network, based on Kim’s research, the speed and the power of the LASER are defined as the input and bending angle is the output. The results are evaluated by experiment and comparing to other researches. Finally heating paths and parameters are defined for the creating the 2-dimensional shapes with different areas and simple 3-dimensional shapes such as spherical and saddle horse ones
