- Population growth require increasing demand of Energy. The fossil fuels are the main source of energy. However, they are main source of carbon dioxide emissions. Considerable amount of fossil fuels is used in the power plants. Increasing trend of electricity consumption as well as the lack of alternative fuels such as renewables in the short time will increase the consumption of fossil fuels and emissions. The most important greenhouse gas emitted from the power plants is carbon dioxide. That's why the separation of carbon dioxide from the gas stream of power plants is necessary.Separation of the carbon dioxide by adsorption is considered in this project both experimentally and theoretically. In order to obtain the required information to design the units, the laboratory scale unit is constructed and different experiments were performed. Adsorption operations done at different pressures and different height of adsorbant’s bed. The break through curves, saturation times, and the amount of carbon dioxide adsorption have been measured. The isotherm curves are obtained by changing the pressure. The suitable models are well fitted. Then, the process is simulated by using experimental data and economic feasibility is calculated. The results show a decrease in energy reduction by plant to 6.8 %. The cost per avoided carbon dioxide is estimated 20 $ and 37 $ based on internal and international costs, respectively. This cost for an amine separation unit is reported to 50 $ in the literature. In general, 2 GJ per ton of carbon dioxide is required when using conventional amine solution method. The possibility of using carbon dioxide in aerogel synthesis is also checked out
