- Abstract:
- One of existing passive control procedures for reducing the seismic response of structures is using tuned mass dampers. This damper consists of three main elements, including mass, damping and stiffness. A conventional tuned mass damper consists of a relatively small auxiliary mass attached to a main structure to be protected. The principle of operation consists in inducing a vibration energy transfer from the main structure to the auxiliary mass, which dissipates the input energy while vibrating out of phase with the structural motion. In this study, the usage of non-conventional tuned mass dampers (TMD) with large mass ratios, in reducing the seismic response of structures and the way to access the appropriate performance of dampers using High Damping Rubber Bearings (HDRB) is investigated. To meet this purpose, an 8 story steel structure was designed and modeled. The model is simulated by means of OpneSEES program and then it was analyzed, while 7 cases were considered: uncontrolled, TMD with mass ratio 2%, 3% and 4% and also non-conventional TMD with 1 isolated story, 2 isolated story and 3 isolated story. Time history analysis was considered and for this regard, seven earthquake records were used: Chi-Chi, Imperial Valley, DUZCE, Landers, Loma Prieta Gilroy, Loma Prieta Capitola and San Fernando. The results show that applying the non-conventional TMDs with significantly large mass ratio present more efficient performance than conventional TMDs with small mass ratio. In the case of non-conventional TMDs, the performance could be more efficient than conventional TMDs in controlling the drift response. Also, in case of investigating of story shear force, the non-nonventional TMDs might be more effective than conventional TMDs except at the level of a story, which isolators are put on it. Another advantage of this non-conventional TMDs is that they are not strongly sensitive to the level of earthquakes
