- Abstract:
- Current trend of energy consumption and aging infrastructure of electricity grids mandates high amounts of investment in transmission and distribution networks. On the other hand, with increased awareness about environmental issues, share of renewable energy resources in power generation portfolio has risen in recent years. Microgrids, as one of the most promising solutions to tackle these issues, are able to accommodate high penetration levels of renewable energy sources and distributed generation in distribution systems. However, microgrids sizes are limited due to some operational considerations and as a result, efficient management of distribution systems with high penetration of distributed energy resources is not viable as a single microgrid. In this regard, multi-microgrid architecture has been recently proposed for efficient and reliable management of such distribution systems. According to this architecture, the system is comprised of multiple microgrids, which are operated in close coordination in order to enhance the reliability and efficiency of the whole system. On these bases, this dissertation for the first time, conducts the reliability studies of multi-microgrid distribution systems. In this context and as the first step, an appropriate outage management scheme is developed for such systems and roles and tasks of different parties are introduced. In the next step, distributed energy resources are modeled from reliability point of view and a general framework is proposed for reliability evaluation of such systems. Subsequently, the effect of the proposed outage management scheme on the reliability performance of multi-microgrid distribution systems is explored and some reliability enhancement alternatives are investigated through cost/benefit analysis. All the presented methods and algorithms have been validated via extensive numerical studies, and the obtained results verify the effectiveness and versatility of the presented methods for efficient and reliable management of multi-microgrid distribution systems
