- Abstract:
- In this research, the effect of nonlinear behavior of soil on the nonlinear responses of super-structure has been investigated. During the design process of practical buildings, engineers usually disregard the effect of soil-structure interaction. In some cases in which the effect of soil-structure interaction is considered, nonlinear behavior of soil usually is modeled through an equivalent linear method which is proposed by the most existing design codes. Past studies show that considering the effect of soil-structure interaction, could change the responses of super-structure in comparison with those whose base are fixed. In many of these studies, nonlinear behavior of beneath soil is modeled through equivalent linear method. A few parametric researches on the effect of inelastic behavior of soil on the nonlinear responses of super-structure have been done so far. In the following research, the effect of soil’s ductility on the superstructure’s ductility has been studied. To do so, the super-structure is modeled as an SDOF structure which is representative of the first vibration mode of MDOF structures and the beneath soil is modeled through two different methods: 1- equivalent linear method, 2- BNWF method. Moreover, the accuracy of structure’s responses resulting from equivalent linear method proposed by design codes for modeling of beneath soil’s nonlinear behavior has been investigated. The results illustrate that in some cases in which beneath soil experiences severe nonlinear displacements, the difference between structure’s responses which are gained through the equivalent linear method and those resulted from more precise modeling method which is BNWF model, is considerable. However, in such conditions in which the beneath soil does not experience considerable nonlinearity, the results which are gained through these two methods are approximately the same. Moreover, the results showed that the super-structure’s ductility demand will be decreased by increasing in nonlinear behavior of beneath soil
