  7. Abstract:
  8. Using appropriate box as an artificial boundary condition is one of the critical tasks in geotechnical physical modeling of the soil mass especially under cyclic loading such as earthquakes. In general there are two types of boxes which can simulate boundary conditions of scaled models as rigid or flexible conditions. Main purpose of this study is design and construction of a flexible box in a way that effects of boundary condition have been minimized during tests. Construction of this box is the first step of an investigation project which concern to evaluate the effect of lateral spreading as a result of liquefaction on deep foundations of bridges, piers, harbors by using shake table test and methods which can withstand and decrease the damages due to this phenomenon. This study is a group work project include some PhD and MSc students. Lateral spreading induced by liquefaction is described as a displacement and deformation of ground with mild slope or closed to a front due to liquefaction of subsurface layers. Considering recent damages during past earthquakes and Iran seismicity zoning, importance of studying this phenomenon by using scaled-model tests become clear. Therefore considering ideal boundary conditions for soil mass in physical modeling and the ways to approach them in addition to Iran local condition such as economic and construction facilities, a laminar shear box has been designed and constructed. This box is a one-directional box which can be classified as a large-scale laminar box. Design of this box is considered in a way that effect of boundary condition minimized during testing of scaled model and similarity of stress-strain condition can be provided. Results of box application shows that box laminates in addition to the enough rigidity have a minimum interlaminate friction and can induced shear strain limit of 19% to the soil model
