- Abstract:
- Base-isolated structures are known for their effectiveness in performance improved of structures subjected to earthquake excitations. The limitations on the base displacements of these isolations systems, however, limit the amount of performance improvement that can be practically obtained. In fact, this is among the most important design parameters of base isolation systems. In this study, tuned liquid dampers have been employed to reduce the displacement demands at the isolated bases of structures, while maintaining performance.
For this purpose, structural models including three-, six-, and nine-story buildings are considered. Furthermore, “Housner Model” is employed in order to model the tuned liquid damper, due its convenience and little computational effort. Then, by defining the relative performance index of structures, seismic base-isolation systems with 200, 250, and 300 mm base target displacements are designed for each building model. In addition, OpenSEES software is used for modeling the base-isolation structures and the TLD.
For these analysis cases, it was observed that tuned liquid dampers can reduce the base displacement demands by as much as 23%. It was also observed that tuned liquid dampers are most effective for shorter structures with stiffer isolation systems.
