Experimental Investigation of Formation Damage Caused by Polymer Mud

  8. In oil industry, increment of drilling mud viscosity is of great importance. Water based polymers are widely use as drilling fluid to achieve this goal. Formation damages can be occurred by invading polymer solution into the formation in different ways such as scale and precipitation. These damages appear in different shapes such as reduction in relative permeability and productivity index reduction. In this study we have proposed, designed and fabricated a novel device, called sand pack, to measure the damage of the reservoir which enable us to calculate relative permeability and recovery factor by means of pressure difference and flow rate. Using this lab-scaled device we have measured damages occurred to reservoirs. According to functionality of this sand pack, some specific experiments have been designed to run this device. These experiments include a 1000 ppm of Xanthan solution flooding into the sand pack device with absolute permeabilities range from 5.8 to 6.3 mD The results then were analyzed by considering unsteady state condition and JBN method formulations. Moreover, it has been shown that using Xanthan gum polymer as a viscosifier and fluid lost polymer, decreases the oil relative permeability and causes damage to reservoir. Although the reduction of oil relative permeability is marginal, an increment in water relative permeability can be observed. Finally, it has been concluded that using Xanthan gum as flooding polymer in tight reservoir does not have significant effect on recovery factor.
