Hospital Process Management in order to Reduce the Hospitalization Time

  8. Health care is one of the basic needs of humankind, and meeting this important need is the responsibility of hospitals. Public hospitals, as the costliest operating units of the health care system, have always faced limited resources. Therefore, efficient use of resources, such as admission beds as undeniable necessities, could be used as an effective approach to meet the growing demand of patients, use health center capacities optimally, and reduce costs. To this end, in this research, a hospital process management approach is used to improve the utilization of hospital admission beds as a valuable resource, and reduce the false bed occupancy rate in Shohada-e-Tajrish University Hospital affiliated with Shahid Beheshti University in Tehran. This study focuses on the hospital treatment processes. Firstly, it considers the work flows to identify the processes and their obstacles and problems. Then, considering the results of the previous step, a list of processes that affect the duration of a patient’s hospitalization is discovered, and the drawbacks of each were identified. Afterward, in consultation with hospital nurses and workforces, some solutions were proposed to remove the identified drawbacks and to improve the processes. One of the proposed solutions is applying a pre-discharge room which leads to the improvement of the discharge process. This proposed solution is simulated using Awesim software to be considered in terms of execution, so that, in case a satisfactory impact in the virtual model, it can be implemented in the real system. The results of the simulation shows an increase of 7.72 percent in hospital responsiveness which approves improvement in using hospital admission beds
