- Abstract:
- Mental models are a reflection of the individuals’ cognitive structure. In fact, these models are the conceptual frameworks that people form based on their experiences and knowledge. These models gives the individuals the ability to predict the results of an action and interpret their surroundings. In this cognitive-linguistic study, mental models are defined as concepts and the relationships between them in a particular context. Considering this definition of mental models, we could extract the mental models of two American presidents of opposing parties, Barack Obama and George W. Bush, from their speech transcriptions during their presidential periods and classify their concepts in to different categories using AutoMap, a textual network analysis tool used for extracting, presenting and comparing mental models from texts, and ORA in order to do statistical and computational analysis on the extracted mental models(meta-networks). This is important to notice that these tools are first used on a corpus containing political speech transcripts in this study. In this thesis, using the criteria of Carley’s classification of concepts and the metrics presented in network analysis, we tried to put the concepts of these politicians’ mental models in to 8 distinct categories and identify the common concepts used by these individuals in a particular context and in the final step, we could specify the affecting, salient and key agents and actors and their exclusive tasks in each mentioned individuals’ mental models in their foreign policy and present a non-partisan linguistic analysis of these mental models with minimal human intervention
