- Abstract:
- The main purpose of the study was to introduce and utilize e-Readers in teaching and testing and compare the participants’ reading performance with those of the participants using paper books. To explore the learners’ perspectives and attitudes toward the use of electronic publications, 60 upper intermediate and advanced English language learners’ experience was examined via the data which were collected through interviews on their motivation and engagement. The two phases of this study were conducted in two separate sessions with a time interval of twenty days. In order to create a description of the details of the participants’ experiences using e-Readers, a descriptive analysis of their experience in using the two modes of reading comprehension was provided. The major findings include relatively higher reading comprehension scores on e-Readers though statistically insignificant, more positive attitudes and enhanced motivation of the e-Reader group toward reading, and decreased time spent to complete the reading task in the e-Reader group. The results of the quantitative and qualitative analyses revealed that although there were some subtle differences in the readers’ comprehension on paper and e-Readers, there was a statistically significant difference between the two groups’ motivation and attitude toward reading. Moreover, based on the findings of this study and documentation obtained directly from students sharing their experiences, this research encourages teachers to pursue the use of electronic readers take advantage of benefits of incorporating this digital tool into their literacy instruction
