Realization of Congratulation and Condolence Strategies in a Computer-mediated Social Network: A study of Cross-cultural Similarities and Differences between Native speakers of English and Persian

- Evidently, language knowledge is not limited to linguistic competence rather it is related to sociolinguistics competence as well. Moreover, the cultural norms of a society affect the way people communicate. In other words, language is the medium through which culture, tradition, and values are realized and manifested. Accordingly, speech acts such as congratulations and condolences are shaped by the cultural norms of societies and it is quite common to expect differences in congratulations and condolences strategies across cultures. The aim of this study was to contribute to the intercultural pragmatics by exploring the strategies used by Iranian Persian speakers, Iranian EFL learners, and American speakers of English in the fulfilment of the speech acts of condolences and congratulations. The related data were collected through the medium of social network of Instagram by posting death announcement and birthday news of two celebrities in the United States and two celebrities in Iran. Participants of the study included native English speakers, native Persian speakers, and Persian EFL learners who commented in response to the death announcements and birthday news. Content analysis was employed to extract the condolence and congratulation strategies used by the three groups of the participants. The content analysis of the congratulation corpus led to the emergence of eight categories of congratulation strategies for Persian speakers, seven categories for EFL learners, and nine categories for American native speakers. The corpus on condolences was also content analyzed and, consequently, seven categories of condolence strategies were identified for Persian speakers, nine categories for EFL learners, and seven categories for American native speakers. Statistical analyses indicated that native English speakers, native Persian speakers, and Persian EFL learners were different respecting certain categories of condolences and congratulation strategies
