  7. Abstract:
  8. One of the most important parameters of an implanted device in the human body is its ability to operate for a long time to decrease the need for surgery in order to replace the battery. Therefore, the radio transceivers in these devices are designed in such a way to reduce the power consumption as much as possible. But, at the same time, it is crucial that the bit error rate be as small as possible to decrease the number of incorrect sent and received bits. Thus, the phase noise should also be as small as possible in order to reduce the bit error rate. In this thesis, a transmitter has been designed for Medical Implant Communications Service standard. In order to reduce the power consumption, mixer and power amplifier have been eliminated in our design, and the main part of the proposed transmitter is an oscillator. For the first time, a CMOS oscillator with N-Path Filter has been introduced and simulated in this thesis which has much better phase noise in comparison to the conventional CMOS LC oscillator. In addition, there is no inductor in the N-Path Filter’s structure which is another advantage of this design. Moreover, the oscillation frequency can be modified easily in the CMOS oscillator with N-Path Filter without the need for varactors. The complete circuit of a transmitter in MICS standard has been designed and simulated in TSMC 0.18µm CMOS thechnology based on the proposed CMOS oscillator with N-Path Filter. FSK modulation has been used in our design and the power consumption of the proposed transmitter is 620µW and its phase noise is -121dBc/Hz at 1MHz frequency offset. The figure of merit of our transmitter is higher than the previously reported transmitters
