  7. Abstract:
  8. Railway transportation is a subsystem of the conventional land transportation mode which has considerable advantages including the reduction of air pollution, improving the economic parameters, capability of mass transport of freight and passenger, and much higher safety, in comparison to other modes. The maintenance costs originating from the low longevity of the wheels and the high detachment of wagons in railways containing sharp curves as well as the difficulty to determine the real wear behavior of train wheels are some of the important challenges of railway transportation system. In this thesis, firstly, the parameters relating to the wheels was investigated by the measurements of the wagons moving in real condition. The Southern line of Iran was selected for the studying railway. This railway includes many distinct and consecutive curves which cause the increase in the flange wear rate and the wagon detachment. In order to more accurate measuring of wheels parameters of the chosen moving wagons and analyzing their wear behavior, the laserview instrument was utilized. The results show that the wear of the wheel tread is negligible in comparison to the wheel flange. In other words, the wheel tread in contrast to the conventional railways, remains nearly not worn. To improve the wheel longevity, new maintenance strategies should be employed to obtain the optimal condition. Therefore, in order to the exploitation of the maximum available thickness of the wheel tread and flange and with the satisfaction of the UIC standard limits, it is necessary to determine the distribution and variation of the stress, as one of the important factors of wear. In this thesis, to determine the optimized range of flange thickness with the minimum wear rate, the results of the investigation of the wear behavior of the wagons wheels is analyzed, in Southern line of Iran, by four methods: 1) Analytical Hertz theory, 2) Finite element analysis, 3) Wear analysis and determining the wheel wear index and the wagon derailment using a dynamic analyzing software and 4) Economical evaluations of maintenance based on the objective function. Hence, by using the four mentioned methods, the optimal maintenance strategy of wheels and wagon is suggested. By employing the strategy in the related railway company, with a reduction of the wagon detachment, the wheels longevity and the cost economizing was improved more than 30 percent
