- Abstract:
- In this study, thermo-mechanical behavior of an austenitic stainless steel AISI316L was investigated using mathematical modeling and experimental analysis during warm rolling process. First, the thermo-mechanical analysis was carried out employing the finite element software, Abaqus CAE, to assess temperature, strain, velocity and stress distribution during rolling. Then, rolling operations on 316L austenitic steel were performed under different working conditions while mechanical testing as well as microstructural observations were made on the rolled steels. Using simulation results and practical data, microstructural events and mechanical properties after warm rolling of stainless steel were studied and justified. Moreover, the behavior during warm deformation and occurrence of dynamic strain aging have been studied by means of tensile testing at elevated temperatures ranging between 370-750°C and different strain rates. The results demonstrated that in rolling with initial temperature of 1000 °C, 25% reduction and rolling speed 30 rpm, static recrystallization occurred after hot rolling but this took place partially in the samples rolled with initial temperature of 900 °C. Also, in the warm rolled samples contained rolling lines owing to the occurrence of shear bands and mechanical twins. Moreover, the phenomenon of dynamic strain aging occurred in warm tension experiments, causing variations in yield stress, ductility and strain rate sensitivity. The simulation results indicated that the strain distribution in the specimen was distributed non-uniformly while the upper part of the sample in contact with the work-roll had the highest strain while the least applied in the central region. In general, higher non-uniformity was observed in samples rolled with initial temperature of 1000°C and with increasing rolling speed, the strain distribution becomes more uniform through thickness direction
