  7. Abstract:
  8. Five-Level Active-Neutral-Point -Clamped (5L-ANPC) converter is used for medium-voltage and high-power applications. In many of these applications, availability and robustness against fault are the most important issues. On the other hand, this converter is made of a large number of power semiconductor switches, diodes and capacitors which could increase the failure probability. Thus, fault detection of power circuit elements is necessary for fault tolerant operation of the converter. In this thesis, following an introduction to the topology and operation principles of Five-Level Active Neutral point clamped converter, a novel open-circuit fault detection and localization method is proposed. In this method, by comparing the measured output voltage with the reference and estimated voltages, the fault and its location is identified, respectively. Also, all the practical aspects including capacitor voltage ripples, system delays etc. are considered by using the "voltage" and "time" criterions. The performance of the proposed method is verified by numerical simulation of a medium-voltage and high-power converter and implemented on a down-scale 5L-ANPC prototype. The fault detection and localization method as well as control scheme are implemented on a FPGA. Thus, fault detection and localization does not need any additional sensor and measurement. The simulation and implementation results confirm the effectiveness and accurate operation of the method for fault detection and localization
