  7. Abstract:
  8. Spent Caustic is the waste resulting from scrubbing of hydrocarbon streams with caustic solution. A thorough research on wastewater treatment to be performed at Tehran Oil Refinery in order to eliminate acid gases such as CO2 and H2S from LPG obtained from scrubbing given the fact that these gases are not eco-friendly, and the current systems of wastewater treatment are inefficient. Therefore, after investigating different methods used in Spent Caustic treatment, WAO method has been chosen to treat the wastewater at Tehran Oil Refinery. In this method, wastewater is oxidized with air at high temperature and pressure to reduce its COD. However, its high cost and operational difficulty of performing this procedure in the recycle unit make it difficult to be used at Tehran Oil refinery. For instance, heating wastewater in order to reach the operational temperature for WAO method increases energy consumption significantly. On the other hand, due to the use of heat exchangers and equipment that should bear high temperature and pressure the cost of using this method increases enormously. Lack of cooling water in the recycle unit is another problem that should be considered. In order to solve these problems and reduce the cost of construction and operation of this method, its feasibility at low temperature and pressure should be examined. Hence, Ultra Violet radiation has been used to complete the oxidation process and achieve high COD elimination. In order to determine the feasibility of this new method laboratory plan based on WAO method with the aforementioned modifications has been designed. By performing the designed experiments and analyzing the results obtained from them, the feasibility of this method to remove COD of wastewater at Tehran Oil Refinery has been approved
