Synthesis, Characterization and Study of the Optical Properties of Gold(I) Complexes Bearing Vinyl Pyridine and 1,8-Naphtyridine Ligands

- The reaction of AuCl(SMe2) with two equiv of 2-vinylpyridine(2-Vpy) and one equiv of AgOTf gave the gold(I) complex [Au(2-Vpy)2], 1. Also the cationic gold(I) complex [Au(1,8-Naph)2][NTf2], 2, in which NTf2 is Bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide, has been prepared from the reaction of AuCl(SMe2), two equiv 1,8-naphthyridine and one equiv Ag(NTf2). The partial replacement of the NTf2 counter ion by PF6 using the reaction of 2 with one equiv TlPF6 leads to formation of the gold(I) complex [Au(1,8-Naphthyridine)2]〖"[NTf2]" 〗_("1" ⁄"3" ) 〖"[PF6]" 〗_("2" ⁄"3" ), 3. The solid state structure of 3 was determined using X-ray crystallography and its optical properties have been studied at room temperature in both solid state and solution. This complex shows different gold distances along the gold chain which is completely linear with all angles equal to 180º. Further more, complex 3, shows intense change in emission in the solid state by addition of 1 drop of acetone. Similar complexes with OTf, [Au (1,8-naphthyridine)2][OTf], 4, and BF4, [Au (1,8-naphthyridine)2][BF4], 5 counter ions also have been synthesized and their absorption and emission properties have been investigated at room tempreture
