  7. Abstract:
  8. Increasing global demand for water, food, energy and the interdependency of these three nexuses increase the necessity of finding suitable solutions and making policies considering the impact of each nexus to the others. The aim of developing greenhouses is to produce high-quality food with high performance while the water consumption decrease. This comes along with huge amount of energy consumption. Solar greenhouse technology utilizes solar energy to decrease heating demand of greenhouse to zero. The greenhouse performance has a direct correlation with climate condition. This research has been conducted to present optimal design for solar greenhouses. Firstly, a solar passive design was developed based on solar greenhouse design principles, previous researches, and successful experiences. A thermal model was developed to investigate the inside air temperature as the main performance parameter. Applying this model to Tehran climate condition showed solar greenhouses can perform there without any auxiliary heating, then the same results for different climate conditions in Iran demonstrated that moderate climates like Tehran is more suitable for solar greenhouses. Sensitivity analysis on structural parameters on greenhouse building showed that there is an optimal size for the greenhouse in each climate condition. An optimization model has developed on the thermal model to find optimal size in each climate condition. Solar optimal greenhouse in Tehran works 85% of time passively and 15% of time needs auxiliary heating/cooling. The size of this greenhouse is11.5 meter height, 20 meter width, 45 degrees south roof angle and 40 degrees north roof angle
