- Abstract:
- The growing usage of nonlinear loads has resulted in increasing voltage and current harmonic levels in distribution systems. Additionally the faults occurring in the distribution system cause voltage sag at the point of customer supply. These two power quality disturbances impose considerable costs on consumers through disrupting the correct performance of sensitive loads, causing unintended outages and decreasing the devices’ useful lifetime. Besides the aforementioned power quality issues, the electric power loss has a determining role in operational costs. In this thesis, based on feeder reconfiguration and shunt passive filters, a strategy is proposed in order to reduce the average voltage sag severity, enhance the harmonic indices and reduce power loss in the distribution system. At the planning stage, the optimal placement of automatic switches and passive harmonic filters is conducted, and at the operation stage, the optimal distribution system configuration and the setting of the shunt reactive compensators including capacitors and filters are determined. For the sake of increased modeling accuracy, various sag-generating fault conditions such as symmetry or asymmetry and fault impedance are taken into account and a probabilistic model for nonlinear loads together with analytical equations for calculating the harmonic indices’ expected values is introduced. This strategy is applied to a 33-bus test system in the presence and absence of distributed generation units considering the uncertainties. The comparison of the optimization results with the base case indicates that the foregoing objective functions can be simultaneously enhanced by equipping a fraction of the network’s lines with automatic switches and replacing some of the network’s capacitors with appropriate harmonic filters
