- Abstract:
- Sarcheshme Copper refinery is using ion exchange columns to supply deionized water to the refinery. Every day, 240 cubic meters of waste water from ion exchange columns process are released in nature. The main purpose of this research is to use membrane distillation to purify this wastewater, which reduces the fresh water requirement and at the same time prevents environmental pollution. Membrane distillation technology is capable to purify the high salinity wastewater that other conventional membrane technologies are not able to purify. In this study, the PTFE membrane was used due to its high permeability and low surface energy with pore size of 0.22 μm and membrane thickness of 0.2 to 0.32 mm. The membrane distillation process is based on the liquid-vapor equilibrium. In this method, the steam is transported from a membrane with micro-pores, the force of which is the pressure gradient of the two sides of the membrane (due to temperature difference). In this study, direct contact membrane distillation configuration was used. Screening of significant factors in process performance, interaction between parameters and optimization of them by Design Expert Software are carried out. It is found that feed concentration has the greatest and the membrane thickness has the least effect on permeate flux. At the optimum point, the membrane thickness is 0.22 mm and the feed temperature is 55.6 ° C, the operating time is 9 hours and 12 minutes. The estimated permeate flux is 14.33 kgm-2hr-1
