- Abstract:
- The importance of having a rich repertoire of vocabulary at one’s disposal is evidently an undeniable fact for a successful communication. However, the best way to improve the lexical knowledge of the students is an issue that is still open to dispute. Considering this issue the present study focused on vocabulary learning strategies in L2 teaching. Actually, this study aimed at investigating three different methods of teaching new words to Iranian students in order to determine which one of the methods is more effective in terms of immediate and delayed retention. So the researchers strived to examine the question of how two different mnemonic devices, i.e., the Keyword method and the Pictorial images method, and also the Rote learning /translation method affect learning and retention of vocabulary items in different genders. For this purpose, 60 participants composed of 30 female and 30 male students were assigned to this study. After homogenizing the participants in terms of language proficiency, they were randomly divided into three fairly equal groups (two experimental groups and one control group). The students in the experimental groups were instructed to use the mnemonic devices and the pictorial image strategies, whereas the participants in the control group used the rote learning strategy. At the end of each section of the treatment, immediate-posttest was administered to measure the participants’ short-term recall of the instructed lexical items. Two weeks later, a multiple-choice delayed-posttest of vocabulary was administered to compare vocabulary achievement among the two experimental groups and the control group. The results of the immediate and delayed post-test data analysis indicated the superiority of the experimental groups over the control group. It also indicated that gender differences were not significant in the three groups. The results of immediate posttest and delayed posttest indicated that the participants who used the Mnemonic devices method could retain vocabulary items better than those who used the Pictorial method and Rote learning strategy
