  7. Abstract:
  8. Nowadays, improvement in operational condition of distribution networks considering daily growth in electrical energy usage with financial limits appears as a huge challenge for network operators. Under these kind of circumstances, operators need to have efficient and inexpensive plans more than ever. Considering high share of power losses in overall pro-duced power, utilities always tried to minimize losses in Iran and other points of world. In addition, numerous equipment in distribution networks compared with the transmission level, impose high costs to reliability plans. Therefore, reliability improvement plans have been paid low attention by distribution network operators. This lower attention has turned distribution networks to the main reason of low reliability level in power. To fill this gap, utilities are to improve their roadmap in serving the customers. In this regard, researchers proposed smart grid concept to improve performance of power systems. Distribution power systems’ automation is one of the technologies in smart grid concept. In distribution sys-tems, different type of equipment like remote control switches (RCSs) are employed to im-prove controllability and response of network in various operational points. As any other facilities in power systems, more RCSs deployment imposes higher operational cost to sys-tem. Needless to mention, finding optimal number and location of RCSs own a lot of sig-nificance. Considering private and semi-private ownership of distribution systems can in-tensify this significance. In this thesis, an optimization model is proposed to identify the optimal number and location of RCSs in order to minimize power losses and improve reli-ability in distribution systems. In this regard, to guaranty the optimality of solution and to convert the proposed model into a computationally inexpensive model, novel linear and mixed-integer linear models are proposed for power flow and reconfiguration problems in distribution system, respectively. Then, utilizing the introduced models, a mixed-integer linear model is proposed to optimize number and location of RCSs in order to minimize power losses and improve reliability of system. Providing global optimal solution, high accuracy together with a fare runtime are features of the proposed models. There are lots of hope that distribution network operators apply the proposed model to reach the lower oper-ational costs
